Ebelskivers!

Delicious Ebelskivers!

As I mentioned in my “Christmas Traditions” post, Ebelskivers are little, round pancakes that my mother-in-law grew up eating at Christmastime.  It’s now a fun tradition that we have at our home during the holidays too.

Ebelskivers Recipe! www.mytributejournal.com

Ebelskivers are fluffy bites of yummy holiday goodness!  We like to have Ebleskivers for breakfast or dinner, served with fruit and bacon or sausage.

I got an Ebelskiver pan for a wedding gift and I thought it was so cute, but had no idea how to use it!  Cast iron Ebelskiver pans are more heavy duty and cook the batter more evenly–you’ll find them at any specialty kitchen shop or I have even seen them at sporting-goods stores.  We used to turn our Ebelskivers with an old hat pin, but these handy wooden tongs are available now.

Here is my mother-in-law, Norma Wilding’s recipe for Ebelskivers–we’ve tried a few different recipes, but always go back to this tried and true one of hers!

I like Ebelskivers best with a little butter and syrup, but a lot of people like them served with fruit jam and powdered sugar.

Ebelskivers are really good any time of year, but we always have them during the holidays!  If you try them, I know you’re going to love them!

Along with many other things at Christmastime, food plays a big part in what makes the holidays so special for us!

Christmas Traditions!

Christmas Traditions!

Several years ago, my husband surprised me with this neat Christmas platter during a particularly hectic holiday season when my mom was not well–the sentiments expressed, along with other special family traditions, are a good reminder of what to focus on most at Christmastime.

We all have unique holiday traditions that speak to our hearts and help define Christmastime for us…here’s a few of mine.

Christmas Music

Often before the decorations are even pulled out of storage or the crazy frenzy of shopping gets underway, Christmas music is being played.  There’s the old classic tunes that we will always love, but I look forward to the new albums coming out each year that change things up a bit and set the perfect holiday mood.

Christmas Music www.mytributejournal.comHuman Nature, a talented group from Australia was one of our new favorite choices this year, their music puts a neat twist of Motown “doo-wop” in your Christmas!  I’m looking forward to seeing them perform live in Vegas this next weekend.

George Strait Christmas music www.mytributejournal.com

Underneath the suits and ties that he wears to work, my husband is really country cowboy at heart!  It just doesn’t seem like Christmas at our house if George Strait’s “Classic Christmas” isn’t part of our holiday music line-up.

Christmas Ornaments

One of the traditions we had as a family when our children were growing up was to buy a new ornament for our family room tree every year.   My husband and I still continue to do this now, even with all the kids away from home.

Crate and Barrel ornaments www.mytributejournal.com

This little guy from Crate and Barrel made it home with us this year.  Crate and Barrel has a large assortment of handcrafted ornaments from various countries that are fun to pick from.

Christmas Books

I think one of the things I love most about this time of year is browsing through all the wonderful Christmas books.  Along with getting a new ornament each year, my husband and I also used to surprise our kids with a new Christmas book during the holidays.  Our little granddaughters love reading them with us now!

"The Christmas Wish" by Lori Evert www.mytributejournal.com

“The Christmas Wish” by Lori Evert is our book pick this year.  This book tells a darling story about Anja, who sets out on a grand adventure to make her dream of helping Santa come true.  The photography by Per Breiehagen, is truly amazing!

I mean really, is there anything better than putting on some cute, new Christmas socks and reading a great Christmas book!

Christmas Food

While you won’t find me spending a lot of time baking in the kitchen during the holidays, my husband and I do enjoy making up some of our favorite Christmas recipes to serve to family and friends.

Ebelskivers www.mytributejournal.com

My mother-in-law’s family was of Scandinavian descent and making these little round pancakes called Eebelskivers at Christmastime was one of their traditions that has also become one of ours.  (I’ll share our Ebelskiver recipe in my next post.)

Another of our favorite holiday treats doesn’t take any more effort than to run to the nearest grocery store!

Christmas peppermint ice cream www.mytributejournal.com

Farr Peppermint ice cream, (only available during Christmas) with its little bits of candy cane, is a yummy Christmas dessert or snack, especially when you serve it with Pepperidge Farm gingerbread cookies!

A Christmas Visit With Santa!

I’ve heard it said that Christmas is for children–and while that may be true…

image

…I sure know a lot of adults (including me and my husband) who love Christmas all the more as they are able to experience it through the eyes of children!

A quick, funny side note…as my husband and I got ready for work last Monday morning, we were reflecting on all the neat things we’d done over the weekend, and as I’ve said many time before, I told him how much I loved all the traditions that made this time of year so special.  Noting that we were both dragging our feet as we faced a new week, my clever husband stated that maybe we needed to figure out some Monday traditions to help them be more fun!  Hmmm……now there’s a thought!?!

Some of the things we enjoy as a family throughout the holidays are things we’ve heard about from other friends and family members.  I hope you’ll share a favorite Christmas tradition with us here.

I hope you’re enjoying your holiday season doing all the things that make them special for you!

Creating Your Home Sweet Home! Holiday Curb Appeal!

Creating Your Home Sweet Home!  Holiday Curb Appeal!

A fond childhood Christmas memory was when my family would drive up to my grandma’s house at this time of year and see all the pretty Christmas decorations that adorned her festive holiday porch!

Creating Your Home Sweet Home! Holiday Curb Appeal! www.mytributejournal.com

I especially loved the little wooden angel, similar to this one, that always hung on a small tree by my grandmother’s front porch.

Christmas Angel! www.mytributejournal.com

Although it was just a simple wooden carving, the angel symbolized Christmas for me, welcoming all those who came to my grandma’s house and the wonderful holiday spirit that lay inside her home!

I love to see the houses in my community during the holiday season and all the beautifully decorated porches and entryways.  There are lovely homes adorned with crafty, hand-made ornaments…

…while others try hard to recreate Chevy Chase’s, Griswold Christmas lighting extravaganza.  In their own unique way, every home seems to beckon those who would visit with a lovely welcome that says, “Come in out of the cold and warm your hands and hearts at our hearth.”

Pretty Porches And Other Holiday Curb Appeal!

HGTV magazine has a “Front Door of the Month” series that I love.  Affordable design elements are presented that offer some creative ideas for making your entryway a festive and welcoming part of your home.

Here are some pretty porches and other holiday curb appeal ideas I have come across lately…

I’m a succor for a fresh pine-bough wreath, and the one my neighbor has on her front door is beautiful!

How darling is my friend Hayley’s country glam wreath.  (Click here to see how you can make an assortment of fabric flowers.)

Christmas sled www.mytributejournal.com

Hayley also bedazzled an old thrift store sleigh to give her porch a perfect touch of holiday curb appeal.  I had some wild winter adventures on icy hills using a sled much like this one when I was growing up.  The thought of that probably grips many of you young mothers out there with deep fear in the pit of your stomachs, but back in the day, that’s just how we rolled.  (Click here to read about some of Hayley’s fall decor ideas that she shared on a recent post.)

Outdoor lantern www.mytributejournal.com

A lantern is a perfect addition to your porch any time of the year, but it’s especially fun to spiff it up with a few added accessories at Christmas time!

Framed chalk board www.mytributejournal.com

Chalk board art is so trendy now and is used in a variety of clever ways, but I think this ornately framed version that I saw recently helps provide the perfect hoilday greeting.  (It seems like this would be fairly easy to make too.)

Happy Christmas greetings! www.mytributejournal.com

Some of the best holiday décor on your porch are the people who greet you!  I love everything about my daughter, Malia’s, holiday curb appeal–especially how her girls race to open the door as they welcome you with their happy, unbridled enthusiasm!

Pier One Imports snowman www.mytributejournal.com

It may be too cold where you live to have flowers growing in your porch planter pots, but they can still be festive for the holidays.  I put this little snowman from Pier One Imports in one of mine.    My husband told our granddaughters that Olaf’s (of “Frozen” fame) long-lost cousin Ralph had come to visit at our house!

Here are a few other creative holiday curb appeal ideas that I’ve come across lately.  These are so simple, and yet they offer such a happy, welcoming greeting to your holiday entryway!

It’s fun to go explore your hometown during the holiday season too–not only to discover all the neat activities that are going on, but to see the amazing holiday lights and decorations, as well.

Who wouldn’t want their neighborhood to be known as Christmas Street during the holidays.  My husband and I love to drive around and look at all the pretty Christmas lights around town.

“Dear Vintage Santa,  I hope you have a few things in your bag for a ‘vintage’ girl!”

Some of our favorite eating establishments have eclectic holiday décor to greet us too!   This sweet Santa met my husband and I when we entered our favorite sandwich joint, “The Italian Place” in Logan, last weekend for our favorite Roast Beef Sub!  (Click here for recipe.)

The lights at our local City Creek Mall turn the shopping center into a magical wonderland at this time of year.  Makes going shopping all that more fun!

Getting bundled up and going to see the Christmas lights at Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City is a well-love holiday tradition for many families where I live–the light displays are amazing!

It’s always good to have reminders for the main reason we celebrate this most wonderful time of year!

As you greet family and friends at your doorways during this special holiday season, I hope you find yourselves enjoying so much happiness and many warm embraces!

What are some of your favorite Christmas decorations and/or traditions?
