The New York City Marathon!

The New York City Marathon–A Race Like No Other!

The headline in the 11.4.13 USA Today newspaper read, “NYC Marathon is 50,000 strong!”  Add to that number, friends and family members who come to cheer from the sidelines, and it seems almost incomprehensible!  However, I see New York City as being very much like a large family, whose various members invite other friends and acquaintances over for Sunday dinner, and the parents just welcome the extra people with open arms–you know sort of like “the more the merrier”…since after a certain number of people, it just doesn’t seem like that big of a deal!  New York City, in it’s usual capable way, hosted people from all over the United States and the world with efficient and congenial care!

You often hear that the New York City Marathon is like no other!  After watching my daughter, Mandi, run in the marathon this past Sunday, November 3, 2013, I believe it!  Since last years race was cancelled due to super storm Sandy, combined with the very tragic events that took place at the Boston marathon, many runners looked to this year’s New York City Marathon as a chance to heal emotionally!

The energy and vibrancy of New York City was amped up to full throttle as the throngs of marathon runners arrived!

We enjoyed indulging in the pre-marathon meal with Mandi at Lombardi’s, the oldest pizzeria in America!  So good!  If you ever visit New York City, this is an experience worth having!  The ambience of this quaint, little restaurant alone, is classic New York City–such fun!

What do you follow-up the best pizza with–the best cake!   If you’ve ever heard of the black and white cookies that are so popular at New York City deli’s–this is the cake version–it is moist, creamy perfection!  It’s a good thing you walk and walk and walk some more in New York City!

Come marathon morning, Mandi was bused to the starting point in the wee hours of the morning, even though her start time wasn’t until 10:05.  The weather had turned quite cool on Sunday morning, (apparently runners like it a little cool?) so Mandi was glad to wait for her turn in one of the warm tents set up for the runners!

Mandi’s husband, Cole, is always great support to Mandi during her races!   A biker at heart, Cole, recently bought himself some new running shoes!  (Mandi can be very persuasive!)  I can’t begin to tell you how wonderful it was to have Cole help guide and maneuver us through the busy streets and barricades as we tracked Mandi’s progress!

The New York Police Department was a strong and firm reminder to everyone that New York City was in good hands!

Mandi’s dad was a proud spectator–although having run his fair share of marathons, I know he was a bit itchy to join the runners!

Mandi’s tired but triumphant look of accomplishment was truly inspiration to me to remember that even when we’re busy just living life–we need to always strive to make time to fulfill a few of our dreams in the process!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE RUNNERS!

Have you got a dream you’re going after?

Happy Halloween! Grandma’s Halloween Festival!

Happy Halloween greetings! www.mytributejournal.com

Happy Halloween!

In typical Utah fashion, the weather has gotten much colder and rainy for Halloween night!  The weather definitely puts a bit of a damper on things for all the kids and their parents who are going trick or treating tonight!  I can remember having to make costume adjustments for my children when winter would set in early on Halloween occasionaly!  One particularly warm, balmy year, my oldest daughter dressed up as a Hawaiian hula girl for her school parade, complete with grass skirt and pretty flower lei that her grandparents had recently brought back to her from Hawaii.  Later that Halloween afternoon, a huge blizzard ended up dumping well over a foot of snow and turned our neighborhood into a winter wonderland!  When it was time to go trick or treating, we had to do some quick thinking and do a major revamp on her costume; she ended up going as a member of the Olympic ski team!

Grandma’s Halloween Festival!

When my kids got older and were well past trick or treating age, we still tried to enjoy a warm Halloween supper together!  Now, with my cute granddaughters, the Monday evening before Halloween has evolved into my annual “Grandma Halloween Festival!”

I reversed roles with my husband and dressed as a hunter a few years ago–he came as a reluctant deer!

I think I increased my credibility as a grandma when my “Pinkalicious” costume made its debut!

Halloween Party October 2013 141

My “Despicable Me” minion costume definitely qualified me for the crazy grandma title this year!  I’m not sure my granddaughters knew quite what to think when they saw me!  Since taking both the girls to this movie on our recent sleep over weekend, and seeing how much they adored these funny, little characters, I knew I wanted to re-create one for my Halloween costume.  Ha!  (Dressing up as a cowboy is about as far as my husband tends to go with the whole costume thing!  Knowing that his dad is a cowboy at heart, my son texted him to ask if he was really wearing a costume!?!)

At my Grandma Festival, I just arrange a few fun activities and games to do together with Makena and Marli throughout my house that are all easy to do and inexpensive to make–but they’ve created many treasured memories!

I spooked things up just a bit by keeping the room dim and placing a flicker light by each golf hole!  (It’s a croquet type golf–but a lot of fun all the same!)

Marli was especially tickled with her hole in one!

The fishing pond is always a favorite spot!  I try to make it a little different each year.  I buy a few of the treats that Makena and Marli love best, along with some little toys they’ll like.  (I glue a big magnet to each item so that the fishing poles grandpa makes with a metal bolt attached to the end of the string will guarantee plentiful fishing!)

I try to end the Halloween festivities with a quiet activity so that Makena and Marli aren’t too wound up for their parents when they go home!  This year we set up our tent and read “spooky” stories!  I usually get the girls pajamas for Halloween instead of Christmas, and they put them on before the stories.  This year I even found some that coordinated with their costumes!  I know, lucky find!

Halloween stories! www.mytributejournal.com

The girls loved that there was room for everyone, including their mom and dad, to pile inside the tent while Grandpa reads the stories by the light of the lantern!  Makena suggested we all stay and sleep in the tent too–much to her parent’s relief, we promised her we’d do it this summer when we could go outside!

HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN, EVERYONE!!

I’d love to know some of the fun activities you do at Halloween time!

Chili And Cornbread–The Perfect Halloween Supper!

Best Chili and Tom’s Parkstone Cornbread!  Yum AndYum!

Homemade soups and soft, warm breads are the perfect combination to serve for supper this time of year as evenings get a little cooler and the Halloween season is being celebrated!

Halloween Witch! www.mytributejournals.com

On Halloween night, before trick or treating, we used to enjoy a warm bowl of chili as a family with cornbread coated in generous layers of honey!  (Maybe in hopes of curbing the impending sugar rush a bit!)  I’m sharing both recipes here with you so that perhaps the next time you come home on a cold fall night, you can warm up with a bowl of this best chili!

I wasn’t too much of a chili fan until we discovered this recipe!  (I like the variety of beans used.)  We serve the simmered chili with this delicious cornbread recipe that my husband came across a few years ago and gave it some personal tweaks.  It’s a new family favorite that we enjoy often, especially throughout the cooler fall months!
