Celebrating Valentine’s Day! 5 Fun Ways To Get Your Cupid On!

Celebrating Valentine’s Day…

It’s nice to welcome a new month, warmer weather and a little love in the air as we look forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day!  My husband and I also celebrate our anniversary on the 16th of February!

Celebrating both Valentine’s Day and our wedding anniversary each February, my husband and I obviously feel some added pressure to seek out the ultimate romantic gestures year after year!  However, we both recognized early on in our marriage that life can be unpredictable, so it’s best to keep our expectations realistic when it comes to making plans for these special occasions!

In keeping it real then, here’s some fun ideas of things that I like to do when celebrating Valentine’s Day…

Celebrating Valentine's Day! 5 Ways To Get Your Cupid On!

In an effort to avoid the crowded restaurants in the evening, my husband and I love to go out to one our favorite diners for a Valentine’s Day breakfast instead!  Believe me, a leisure breakfast date promotes a lot more romance than long wait times for a dinner reservation with harried waiters!

Making one of our favorite breakfasts together is another way to get a perfect Valentine’s Day celebration underway too!

Oven Puff Pancakes www.mytributejournal.com

Oven Puff Pancakes is one of our favorite breakfast dishes–they are so easy to make!

My son and daughter-in-law made us Oven Puff Pancakes (also known as Dutch Babies) for breakfast when we went to visit them recently in Oklahoma.  Jake and Whitney served them with fresh berries and four kinds of syrup so we could have a syrup taste-off–so yummy!  (I will be sharing the recipe in my next post.)

I know what you’re thinking–not exactly the kind of physical romance you had in mind! Ha!  But with hectic schedules, this really is a good way to be together and work off a little stress at the same time.  Afterwards, my husband and I usually go home and make our favorite salad together, or we go out and share a hot fudge sundae or some other gooey, chocolatey dessert–hey, you have to splurge a little on Valentine’s Day!

I actually got this idea from some of my kids and their spouses!  Picking out a new game together and some silly heart flannel pj’s sounds crazy, but it really does make for a fun evening together!  Add some of your favorite treats and a bit of competitive edginess and you can’t help but have the best time!

We recently bought the game Qwirkleit’s easy to learn and so much fun to play!

A few years ago, my husband planned a fun night out that recreated one of our first dates.  We went to our favorite pizza place by the college campus where we both attended school, then we came home and watched the DVD version of The Sting” with Paul Newman and Robert Redford, the first movie we saw together when we had just started dating.  As our lives get busy with kids, work and other responsibilities, it’s nice to be reminded of the days when we were in that young, lovey-dovey stage of our relationship!

Celebrating Valaentine's Day www.mytributejournal.com

In this computer age, I think writing love letters has become sort of a lost art!  The letters don’t need to be long, in fact, my husband and I have even done it where you fold the paper back and forth like a fan and write one word on each fold describing something you love about the other person.  At the very least, I think this activity will help us all be better at telling those we care about how much we love them on a more regular basis!  To help you get started, you can print off some heart stationary here!

The wonderful marriage that my parents had is also a good reminder for me to work hard at doing the things that matter most to help keep my own relationship strong!

Here’s to great Valentine’s Day celebrations and always being young at heart!

Exercise Equipment…Some Things Old Are New Again!

Exercise Equipment…Some Things Old Are New Again!

Exercise gear www.mytributejournal.com

In trying to be true to my ongoing goal to try new ways to exercise and stay fit, I decided to try out a weight-lifting class the other day after work!  (Yeah, I’m sure you can imagine the motivational pep talk I had to give myself all the way to the gym!)  I felt tired before class, so it goes without saying that I was exhausted and sweaty after it was over!  As I walked by the big exercise equipment room on my way to grab my coat from a hall locker, I did a double-take when I saw a piece of exercise gear on a metal shelf that I hadn’t ever seen there before–memories of my youth literally flooded my mind and I couldn’t resist getting a closer look…

Ab roller www.mytributejournal.comAlthough the updated version of the “waist wheel” or “abdominal roller” as it’s referred to now, is perhaps a safer, more ergonomically balanced version, the use and fitness benefit it provides is still the same…you kneel down, grip the handles, then roll out the length of your torso and back again!  My parents bought one of the original waist wheels, and to this very day I think it is one of the best abdominal strengthening exercises there is–your arms will get a work-out too!  After spying the wheel at the gym, I couldn’t help but go take if for a quick test ride–my stomach muscles are still sore!

This past November when my husband and I visited New York City to see our daughter run in the NYC marathon, leaning up against the wall of the exercise room in our hotel was a mini exercise trampoline–I had to chuckle to myself, it was exactly like the one my parents had exercised on most mornings when I was growing up!

Mini exercise trampoline. www.mytributejournal.com

I’ll admit, I felt a little giddy when I placed the exercise trampoline on the floor and jumped on it for awhile–it really is such a fun way to get in some good cardio exercise!  I remember how my parent’s mini trampoline also entertained all their grandchildren when they came to visit…many ingenious, make-believe games were played on it and a lot of energy was expended, as well!  (Hmm, I’ll have to think seriously about getting one for my playroom!)

Mini exercise trampolin www.mytributejournal.com

The more recent styles of mini exercise trampolines come with a few added “bells and whistles” so to speak.  I’ve even read that a popular trend lately is these big trampoline exercise gyms!  Regardless of style, the incentive element behind any of these exercise trampolines is the simple joy of jumping while putting less stress on joints!  Just what I need!

A new year for many of us usually means renewed goals to exercise more, so we dust off our exercise DVD’s that have been collecting dust on the shelf beneath our TV’s since last summer.  Although much more prevalent today, exercise gurus have been a fitness mainstay for many years.  I can remember my mom doing the enthusiastic work-outs of Jack LaLanne when I was young.  Many from my generation joined Jazzercise classes, boasting color coordinated headbands and leg warmers!  P90X and Insanity are often the choice of fitness enthusiasts today.

Despite the level of intensity of the various workouts available today, the message shared is the same as that from years past–to live healthy, active lifestyles.  The real dilemma lies in figuring out what works the best to help us stay motivated to exercise!

Power juicer www.mytributejournal.com

Would it surprise you to learn that Jack LaLanne was also an advocate of power juicing?  I’m sure he’s smiling down on all those who are embracing the latest resurgence of this healthy practice!  Also interesting to note, is that many of our workout pants today, minus the stirrups, seem to resemble the stretch comfort of the ones Jack LaLanne used to wear!

New, modern exercise equipment today is so streamlined and often comes with computerized work-out programs built right in, however, sometimes I miss the simplicity and easy use of some of the old school exercise equipment!

Exercise bikes www.mytributejournal.com

I absolutely love the Vision Fitness exercise bicycle that my husband and I bought a few years ago, but the original Schwinn model that my parents owned for many years had the most comfortable leather seat–there’s also a lot to be said for being able change the resistance level just by tightening or loosening a knob!

Finally, I can’t end without mentioning exercise footwear!  I mean honestly, need I say more than fuchsia, tangerine or neon yellow!

Salomon trail running shoes www.mytributejournal.com

The only choice there used to be for exercise shoes was either a basic Reebok or Nike shoe in white or black!  Now shoes come in an endless array of colors and there seems to be a shoe made for every sport imaginable!  For my husband, who usually dresses quite conservatively, the brighter the better when it comes to his athletic shoes–in fact, he recently purchased a pair of tangerine Salomon trail running shoes!

New Balance running shoes www.mytributejournal.com

Ironically, my son and two sons-in-law all own a pair of these basic gray New Balance running shoes!  My daughters refer to them as old “grandpa shoes”!  Ha!

What I’m learning now is…

While growing up, I remember my parents as always being health conscious and having a regular exercise regimen.  What I’m learning now is that as I get older, what my parents told me long ago is so true–it’s nice to exercise to LOOK good, but it’s especially important to exercise to FEEL good too!

So, no matter the exercise equipment we choose to use…

"Here's to Looking Good!" www.mytributejournal.com

…and feeling

Fabulous

Is there a certain piece of exercise equipment you wish would make a come back?  I’d love to hear what you do to help you stay motivated to exercise and work-out.

Cinderella Days! Doc Mcstuffins Is In The House!

Cinderella Days!  Doc Mcstuffins Is In The House!

Cindrella Days! www.mytributejournal.com Due to all the holiday festivities and our recent  our Disneyland trip, I didn’t have my usual Cinderella Days with my two granddaughters during the months of November and December.

Although we’re pretty much back tonour regular Tuesday schedule now, my youngest granddaughter, Marli, did undergo surgery recently to have her tonsils and adenoids removed.  To help Marli feel better prepared and more at ease for her hospital stay, the girls and I spent some time together playing Doc Mcstuffins!

Doc Mcstuffins is a darling character, who along with her animal friends, stars in a new cartoon on the Disney channel that Makena and Marli dearly love!

Doc Mcstuffins www.mytributejournal.com

The nurse in me loves that Makena and Marli have always enjoyed playing with the doctor kit I have in my play room…

…but for Christmas I gave them an updated Doc Mcstuffins version–complete with sound effects and sparkles!  It’s especially fun to watch the girls play with this doctor kit and maybe in some small way, feel like they are part of their favorite “Doc Mcstuffins” show!

Prior to it being determined that she needed  surgery, Marli had suffered chronic congestion and sinus infections on and off for about a year.  I was impressed as I watched my daughter, Malia, and her husband prepare Marli for her surgery.  At  two and a half, Marli obviously couldn’t really understand all that was going on, but my daughter said that taking the time to play “check-up” and explain to her that the doctor was going to help her feel better was key to helping Marli know she was safe and loved.

Here’s a few other things my daughter shared with me on how she prepared Marli for surgery:

Since Marli’s favorite color is purple, she was thrilled with her purple hospital gown!

No matter how smooth things may go, it’s never fun to see your child undergo surgery!

Malia also told me that setting aside some of the non-essential activities in their busy schedules helped them all feel less stressed and better able to give Marli the care she needed.  Malia and Shane were also good to include Makena in Marli’s care to help her feel a special compassion during Marli’s recovery.  Grandparents and loved ones are essential in lending a helping hand to care for the children left at home!  Makena and I enjoyed an extra special, one-on-one Cinderella Day while Marli had her surgery, but we were happy to get updates and pictures from Malia to help reassure us about Marli’s condition and let Makena see how her sister was doing.

With all her good care, Marli is nearly fully recovered!  We love this precious, happy girl!

Even though I worked in pediatric surgery for the first few years of my nursing career, as a grandma, I was anxious about Marli’s surgery.  My mom always told me that this was how she felt whenever her grandchildren faced anything outside their normal routine, but I couldn’t fathom it until I became a grandma myself…imagine that!?!

At age five, Malia, also had to have surgery to remove her tonsils and adenoids.  I have such special memories of the loving concern my mom had for me and my family at that time, and the wonderful care she gave us!

It further proves that…
