The Future Is Bright!

The Future Is Bright!

"The Future is Bright!" www.mytributejournal.com

The phrase, “The Future Is Bright” was emblazoned in bold letters across a bulletin board in my son’s bedroom while he completed his pre-dental courses in college.  I watched Jake’s determination and sometimes sheer grit as he strived to do well in his classes and seemingly endless labs required for his chosen field of study.  But just like so many others trying to achieve their goals in life, my son recognized that his success would be determined, in large part, by his ability to take responsibility for his own personal accountability!  Most often, doing this requires hard work and putting forth our best efforts in order to help make our futures bright!

Considering the latest tragedy and senseless loss of lives in Washington, DC, as well as the devastation of the Colorado floods, it seems that sometimes, despite our best efforts to be considerate, hard-working human beings, we can’t help but feel somewhat vulnerable to the disparities of mankind and the unpredictability of mother nature!  In these situations, hope and trust can most certainly elude our personal convictions!

As a maternity nurse, I’m fortunate to be able to witness, almost on a daily basis, the hopeful, yet protective gazes of loving parents as they welcome their new babies into the world, practically willing, if they could, a perfect future for them!  I also see the innocent looks of anticipation in the eyes of my granddaughters, and other sweet children, as they eagerly approach so many new experiences in their young lives that will surely add up to creating the brightest of futures for them!

Assuring A Bright Future!

This classic poem by Shel Silverstein, in the book “Where The Sidewalk Ends” used to be tacked to a bulletin board in our playroom when my three children were younger.

"Hug O' War" by Shel Silverstein

The message is very simplistic, but it also serves to preserve my hope for the future–which is in sore need of a supportive gesture now!  It also gives me better faith that there truly are great things ahead for future generations…including those of my children and grandchildren!

My daughter had an early morning meeting at work yesterday, so I had the opportunity to take my oldest granddaughter to kindergarten.  What a fun experience to witness the energy and happiness of all the children on the playground!

My granddaughters exchanged hugs before we left to take Makena to school!

The delightful faces of these children lined up for kindergarten on a beautiful morning, reaffirmed in my mind, the need for us to always try and work better together to assure that their futures are bright!

What I’m learning now is…

When my parents moved to the city from our small hometown in the country, so that my father could be closer to the college campus where he taught, one of the things my dad loved most about our new home was that it was across the street from an elementary school–he often said that listening to the children playing at recess was one of the things that kept him so young at heart!  What I’m learning now is that in spite of tragedy and things beyond our control, we still need to believe that we can make a difference and work together to maintain the strength and integrity of our core values so that the future of our posterity will be nothing but bright!

The look of anticipation on my sweet granddaughter’s face as she waited for her school to start, truly touched my heart and renewed my firm desire to always try and do the things that would assure a bright future for her and other children!

This is a picture of a picture that my son sent me when he lived in upstate New York.  Although the quality isn’t the best, the message is clear and seems all too appropriate for such times as these, while we once again try to buoy ourselves up and remember what’s really most important in looking forward to bright futures!

What inspires you to look to a bright future?

Cinderella Days! Sleepover Edition!

Cinderella Days…A Fun Sleepover Edition!

Cindrella Days!

Like I’ve said before, there’s nothing quite like watching your own children being parents!  I also remember how it tugged at my heartstrings to leave my children.  We were excited however, to have our granddaughters stay with us for a couple of days, and Malia knew she would be busy providing Shane support during his bike competition last weekend!

Our children are our grandchildren's parents!

I had gotten the girls these Minnie Mouse suitcases in anticipation of their upcoming sleepover.  They had all sorts of special treasures stockpiled in them!

Ever since going there for her mom’s birthday, Makena wanted to go back to the Spaghetti Factory and sit inside the big trolley in the middle of the restaurant!  (Without even reminding the girls, they remembered their “restaurant” manners!)

After bubble soup, story time and back tickles, the girls were tuckered out from their big night on the town!

My husband always used to say that he slept the best when our kids were all under our roof and asleep in their beds!  Since that hasn’t happened in a while now, he was able to get some really good sleep with Makena and Marli sleeping over!

All kids seem to love play lands!  Just bring on the gallon-sized sanitizer afterwards!

Grandpa added a new dimension to our “Cinderella Days!”  We jam-packed a lot into a short amount of time!  As special as it is to see your husband with your own kids, there’s nothing like a grandpa with his grandchildren!

Grandpa drew some funny cartoon people.  Then like he did with our children, he had us take turns making up a story about the pictures he drew.  Makena loved this!

There was an Uncle Jasper, an Aunt Edna and a rascal cousin Kipper among the crazy characters in Makena and grandpa’s story!  Too funny!  If you want to see imagination at its best–I strongly suggest this activity!

Makena made up a story about this picture titled “The Gum Drop Balloon”!

The balloon would drop gum drops and treats to all the children who didn’t have any!  I’m not kidding, I was about in tears!  Our children and grandchildren have bigger hearts than we can ever imagine!

Meanwhile, I’m not sure what Marli’s doll had done–but…!!???!!

A New York City Tribute!

A New York City Tribute!

As cliché as it sounds, like any t-shirt spiriting the infamous slogan sold by endless vendors on the street corners of New York City…

I Love New York!

My parents had traveled to New York City several times in their many journeys throughout their lifetime, but I did not have the opportunity to visit there until I was expecting my youngest child.  My husband’s profession is in finance and he used to travel to New York City more frequently than he does now.  When we were finally able to arrange for me to accompany my husband on a much anticipated business/pleasure trip, I remember waiting for him in the immense courtyards of the Twin Towers feeling that it was surreal to witness the stately presence of these two iconic New York City landmarks!

Like so many events that mark time in history, I think we all remember where we were and what we were doing when we first heard word of the tragic events that took place in New York City on September 11, 2001!  I was at the hospital where I work, prepping to help receive a new baby that was soon to be born that morning by a scheduled caesarean section.  I attended a few other deliveries that day as well, and sadly, it seemed almost as if some of the parents were a little afraid to show the joy they felt as they held their precious babies close while watching some of the news coverage of the horrific events that took place in New York City on that day!  (I suspect that strong, kindred spirits share September 11th birthdays!)

Staue of Liberty www.mytributejournal.com

Like many families, we have taken our children to New York City and enjoyed all the various activities that make going there such a unique experience!  Once while visiting New York, our youngest daughter, Mandi, who was about 17 years old at the time, really wanted us to take a tour of New York University!  Afterwards, Mandi told us that she was going to attend NYU one day!  (As mentioned, I was pregnant with Mandi when I first went to New York, so her love of this amazing city seems to have come innately!)  I’m not sure my husband and I really gave much credence to this statement at the time, and considering the price of tuition, we hoped it was a fleeting dream!

We underestimated the power of Mandi’s determination to fulfill her dream.  She studied exercise physiology as an undergraduate student, and is now working on her PhD at New York University!

New York University www.mytributejournal.comNew York University www.mytributejournal.com

New York City has definitely taken on a more personal role in our hearts now that Mandi and her husband, Cole, live there!

New York Univerity Medical School www.mytributejournal.com

Our son-in-law, Cole, is in his fourth year of medical school at NYU!

Each time you touch down at JFK National Airport and hear Frank Sinatra singing “New York, New York” on the speakers of the elevator as you go up to your hotel room, you can’t help but be engulfed by the energy that is New York City!  We have been lucky to be able to get acquainted with this great city in a more intimate way since having Mandi and Cole as our personal guides when we visit!

On one of our last trips to New York City, we were able to go with Mandi and Cole to see the memorial pools that occupy the space where the two Twin Towers once stood.  We also saw the construction being done on the Freedom Tower.  The reverent nature of this sacred, historic site is palpable!  You leave with a firmer conviction to try harder at doing your part to make the world a better place!

Our neighbor at the time, had a brother killed when a plane crashed into the Pentagon.   We found his name among the many listed at this beautiful memorial!

The two pictures above were taken by Cole and capture so well the kind and thoughtful consideration that the designers of this amazing memorial took to heart as they created a way to pay tribute to all the loved ones lost on September 11, 2001!

We cherish the opportunity we had to see the memorials at Ground Zero with Mandi and Cole!

I’m always fascinated with what Mandi and Cole are doing while living in New York City, and although they assure me that it isn’t always glamorous, they love living there!

When I asked them to tell me in a sentence or two what they loved most about New York City, this was their responses:

Cole said, “One of the things I love about New York is there’s always something new to experience.  You’ve never seen it all!”

New York City! www.mytributejournal.com

Mandi said,  “I love the fall in New York City!  I love that you can feel the anticipation of the holiday season in the air.  It is the best time to attend the farmer’s markets, and it’s a couple of months worth of perfect temperatures!  Another weather note…I love rain in New York.  I have always loved rainy days, so I appreciate that it rains much more here than it does in Utah.  (However, the snow situation is pitiful compared to Utah!)

I also love that on a daily basis I have some nice interaction with a stranger.  People perceive New York City as a rushed and impersonal city, but that is a misconception.  I rarely have a day go by that a stranger doesn’t give a nice compliment or help me out in some way.  Finally, of course, I love all the activities in the city.  If you want an adventure, delicious food, or a relaxed evening out, you can make it happen!”

New York City farmer's market! www.mytributejournal.com

Cole also took this picture of the beautiful New York City skyline and entitled it: “The setting sun on the center of the universe!”  Perfectly stated!

New York City www.mytributejournal.com

Our thoughts and prayers are with New York City and all of America today!  May we ever be a force for good in the world!

I’d consider it an honor if you shared special memories you have of September 11, 2001, or any neat experiences you’ve had in New York City!
