It Takes All Kinds Of Kinds!

World Globe

“Ever since the beginning, to keep the world spinning, it takes all kinds of kinds.”

From lyrics “All Kinds Of Kinds” by Miranda Lambert

My husband and I entered our local airport in the early morning hours one day last May to catch a flight for a combined work/play vacation to Puerto Vallarta.  We were just a few of a handful of people in the airport terminal at the time, so we couldn’t help but notice the energetic disposition of an airport employee who greeted the ticket agents with warm regard and polished the metal fronts of their individual ticket counters with meticulous care!  I wasn’t sure whether this person was just coming on duty or about to finish up his work shift, I just knew that in the few minutes I observed him, he had made enough of an impact on me that I seemed to feel a little less weary and made a mental note to approach the rest of my day with a more positive outlook–after all, I was going on vacation!

Once settled in our seats on the plane, my husband and I observed a disgruntled passenger in the aisle that an airline attendant appeased with charming finesse!  By now, I couldn’t help mentioning to my husband how great some people were at their jobs!  Not that I hadn’t noticed before, but with little else to really occupy my time, I was a captive audience!  As my husband adjusted a pillow behind his head, he simply stated, “That’s what makes life so great–most of us work hard to find our niche, then we try our best to do really well at it!”  Pretty impressive wisdom, considering it was very early and my husband was about to go to sleep!

Since that day, I’ve tried to do better at noticing all the hard work others do–especially when it impacts my life…

Yard Construction www.mytributejournal.com

I think I’ve mentioned, oh, maybe at least a few dozen times, that we’ve had some yard construction done around our house this summer!  The workers who came to re-coat our foundation were some of the hardest working guys I’ve ever seen!  It was a hot summer, but the heat never seemed to bother them!  It takes amazing skill to apply the cement mix.  These men are truly artists at their profession!

Taking pride in a job well done!

On a quick trip to the store to buy more drinks and treats for some of the men working at our house, I was helped with my grocery sacks by a kind, energetic worker gathering carts in the parking lot!  I had my two granddaughters with me, and after we’d gotten back in the car, my oldest granddaughter, Makena said “It was sure nice of that guy to help you grandma, and he was so happy!”

I was in awe at the coordination and attention to detail that was required to pour the cement for our new driveway!  The contractor worked as hard as the rest of his crew members!  A couple of the young workers were his sons–I mean we’re talking really young guys here, and yet the skill set they had obviously learned from their dad on the technique of finishing cement was amazing!  You could tell they took real pride in a job well done!

I am reminded of the expert skills of some talented and diligent workers every time I set foot out my front door!

My husband works in the financial planning field and helps others budget and invest their money.  He does a lot of retirement 401K work too.  He is well versed in the nature of our crazy roller coaster economy and plans his investor’s money accordingly.  He is patient and kind as he reassures clients of their financial futures; it seems that many often view him as an extended family member!  I also love that my oldest daughter’s husband knew that he wanted to work with numbers when he was about twelve years old.  Shane is a math wizard and a great CPA, and seems to know the tax laws like the back of his hand!  I work hard for my money, but find that paying the bills and balancing my checkbook is about as far as I want to venture into the financial world, so I am very appreciative for those who know how to help manage it!

Taking pride in a job well done! www.mytributejournal.comNaja is a housekeeper on the women’s unit at the hospital where I work.  Naja came from Bosnia and doesn’t speak a lot of English, but always greets you with a smile!  Naja goes out of her way to make everything neat and clean.  The floors are perfectly polished and the patient beds are beautifully made by Naja–she doesn’t miss a thing!  I once asked Naja if it was hard for her to go home and clean her own house after work, but she just laughed shyly and told me that she enjoys making things nice for everyone.  The patients especially take note of Naja’s hard work.  Naja constantly inspires me to do my job better!

I work with doctors and nurses who are a credit to their profession and are fun to be around and considerate of others, despite the long hours spent at the hospital.  As my son-in-law, Cole, works to finish up his last year of medical school, I know he will be a valuable asset to the medical field, and not only because of his keen ability to grasp the ever-expanding knowledge base that is required to be a doctor, but also for his desire to be genuinely kind and caring as well!

Watching my father during his many years in the teaching profession, I know how hard he worked, and I realize that being a teacher is one of the hardest jobs in the world if it is done right!  More on this topic coming next week!

Finally, as my husband and I waited for our flight on that morning last May, I saw that most of the other early arriving travelers were military personnel who were leaving for deployment or making a transfer to another base assignment.  Words are not sufficient to describe the selfless, courageous work of these brave people!

Recognizing  Our Superpowers!

Superpowers! www.mytributejournal.com

This is a saying on a cup I recently received as a wonderful gift.  It made me stop and think what I might be capable of in my life if I worked like I really believed that I did hold some sort of superpowers!  In all the various roles we take on each day, how much better would we be at the things we wanted to accomplish if we conducted ourselves as if we actually held magical abilities to help make life better for others?

After being more observant of other’s abilities lately, I’m starting to believe more and more in superpowers!

Since I’m required to wear scrubs at work, I have to at least let my shoes show that I’m willing to go the distance, so to speak!  Ha!

Anyone you’ve observed lately with the extraordinary ability to be amazing at what they do, no matter the circumstances?

Cinderella Days! Busy Worker Bees!

Cinderella Days!  Two Fun Busy Worker Bees!

Cindrella Days! www.mytributejournal.comThe work ethic exhibited by Cinderella in the classic Disney movie, is alive and well in my darling granddaughters!

Despite the outdoor construction going on around our house this summer, I didn’t want the dusty mess to hamper the fun I enjoyed with my two sweet granddaughters when they came to visit.  My worries were quickly put to rest though, as soon as I realized that Makena and Marli thought cleaning up my patio was just another opportunity for us to share a fun afternoon together on one of our recent “Cinderella Days”!

In his book, Life’s Greatest Lessons–20 Things That Matter, author, Hal Urban, points out that “…work and fun aren’t opposites!”  My cute granddaughters emulated this perfectly as they helped me clean my patio!  Just like busy, little worker bees, Makena and Marli happily flitted from one job to another while they chattered and laughed with delightful, synchronized energy and teamwork!  I was mesmerized while watching them work beside me!

Worker Bees! www.mytributejournal.com

Makena and Marli almost seemed to have an unspoken language as they worked together…while one sprayed on the cleaner, the other followed and wiped up afterward!  They especially enjoyed using grandpa’s air compressor to blow the dust off the wicker furniture!

I believe there is no greater feeling of satisfaction than that of completing a task and knowing you’ve done your best!  Even at their young ages, my daughter and her husband have obviously done a great job of helping their girls enjoy good work habits!

It’s important to have children see that we can laugh, play and have fun while we work!  Marli reminded us to take time to admire our efforts!  I think it’s also good to enjoy a little reward for your hard work too!

Also, as the baseball season gets closer to the playoffs and the upcoming World Series, I want to give special recognition to my granddaughter, Makena, and the great job she did playing on her t-ball team this summer!  My husband and I loved watching our children play baseball and softball throughout the years when they were growing up, so it was fun to see Makena carry on the tradition with such enthusiasm!

Comfort Foods To Cure What Ails You!

Comfort Foods To Cure What Ails You!

I don’t get sick too often…I think I get exposed to enough of whatever’s going around when I’m at work at the hospital that my immune system has built up a pretty good resistance!  Thank goodness, because on the rare occasion that I do get sick, I’m not a very patient patient!  This past week however, what I thought was just a little hay fever, ended up turning into a head cold!  Ugh!  (Even cold prevention lozenges didn’t do too much to ease my desire to extricate my head for a few days!)  In the achy haze of my stuffed up sinuses, I found myself in dire need of the comforting effects of my mom’s baked custard and French bread cinnamon toast; her take on chicken soup for the soul, or whatever might be ailing you.

I don’t pretend to understand the psychology behind the relationship we have with certain foods and how it coincides with our emotional wellbeing, I just know there seems to be a direct correlation!  Bake custard is my “warm fuzzy” in life when I’m not feeling up to par!  My mom’s baked custard was also a good way to offset the nasty taste of the medicine we took back then  (There were no fancy flavored cough syrups in those days!)  I’ve carried on some of the same comfort food traditions with my own family.  I can still remember when my two younger children had such bad cases of chicken pox that sores even lined their throats–warm custard was all they seemed to want to eat.

Better Homes and Garden Cook Book www.mytributejournal.com

My mom wasn’t a fancy cook, she just made good, simple recipes, most of which were her version of ones she got from her favorite cookbook, including her baked custard.  I was given a cookbook of my own when I got married.  (Sort of a funny, coincidental footnote–on one of my first dates with my husband, he made a beautiful dinner for me and this very same cookbook was opened on his kitchen counter when we arrived at his apartment!  Yes, it was a very “voodoo” moment!  Ha!)

Better Homes and Garden Reipe Book www.mytributejournal.comJust like my mom’s cookbook, mine is filled with recipe copies from friends, as well as some clipped from newspapers and magazines that I need to copy onto cards and organize.  Maybe I subconsciously do this to somehow emulate my mom–now there’s psychology for you!  I know, not really a good excuse–please tell me that some of you have some overflowing cook books that you are going to organize some day!

I love that the recipe for this baked custard is filed under the title of “Desserts”!  One recipe makes enough for four nice servings.  I used to double the recipe for my family of five and baked the custard in a covered, medium-sized casserole dish.

BAKED CUSTARD

3 eggs slightly beaten

1/4 cup sugar

2 cups milk

1/2 tsp. vanilla

Combine eggs, sugar, and 1/4 tsp. salt.  Whisk milk gradually in to egg mixture.  Add vanilla.  Grind fresh nutmeg on top before baking.  Fill 4-6 medium-sized custard bowls (ramekins work well too) then set in a shallow baking dish filled with hot water about one inch deep.  Bake at 325 degrees for 40-45 minutes.  Bake the large casserole dish for 60 minutes.  The custard should be slightly brown around the edges.  My mom taught me that a good way to make sure the custard is done, but not curdled from baking too long, is to very gently move the dishes back and forth and if the custard moves just slightly in the center, it’s done.  You can also insert a knife about halfway between the middle and edge of the custard, when the knife comes out clean, the custard is done.  It’s so good!

Baked Custard! www.mytributejournal.comI just use a glass baking dish filled with some water.  I think the reason behind baking the custard this way is to keep the milk from curdling or the custard from shrinking away from the edges because it gets baked too fast.  I do cheesecakes this way too.

Baked Custard and French bread cinnamon toast! www.mytributejournal.com

Wallah!!  This also makes a good supper for a lazy night when you just want something light!  My mom made bread quite often, but she always bought fresh French bread at the store and used it to make cinnamon toast.  Of course, I think it’s the perfect thing to go along with the baked custard!

Also, since my husband and I are in this “empty nest” stage of life, we’re finding that you can become a bit complacent when making dinner.  We decided it was a good idea to purchase a few new place settings that are just for the two of us!  We switch it up and mix and match the dishes sometimes, and even add flowers on occasion…whatever works to add a personal touch and make meal time a little more special as we sit down together!

What are some “comfort foods” that kindle special memories for you!  I’d love you to share any!
