In getting married at the ripe old age of 27, I saw a lot of my friends get married before I did and I had time to observe and reflect on what I expected the perfect marriage to be. Often things aren’t as we envision them in our mind, and that’s OK. For me, it has been best to not worry about what a “right” marriage is, but just to enjoy this wild ride together

The motto we both try to remember and live by in our marriage is: “It’s not about me.” This has helped keep a very selfless attitude in our relationship as we both focus more on the other person’s wants and needs more than our own. This attitude has helped to create balance in our relationship and a genuine concern for the other person. Sometimes it’s not easy, especially when I really want something that he doesn’t necessarily agree with; many times we have stomped out of the room mumbling these words under our breath to remind ourselves to keep this perspective and avoid a fight. The other thing that I feel is key in our marriage is communication. Shane and I tell each other EVERYTHING! There are no secrets. We love talking to each other and call several times a day to report even the simplest detail of the day. This has helped create trust in our relationship, as well as strengthen our friendship even more. Talking and sharing things with each other is one of our favorite things to do in our marriage, we are best friends. In fact, when we were dating, I knew Shane was the one for me, when no matter who I was with or what I was doing, I constantly thought I can’t wait to tell Shane about this…I wanted to share everything with him.
